Hindi has been taught as second language since the inception of Sanatana Dharma College. It was only by 20 July 1981 with the commencement of Hindi course that the department became functional as a full-fledged unit. 12 faculty members had worked in the department before the de-linking of the pre-degree course. Later it was reduced to six when pre-degree course was de-linked. The department has maintained commendable academic success in the University exams till date. From the 1990s, almost 90 percent of the faculty members have been PhD holders. At present, all the teachers at the department have doctoral degrees to their credit.
Many renowned personalities are part of the alumni of the Hindi Department. Dr. Madhu Vasudevan, famous Malayalam poet, critic and film lyricist was a former student of the department.
Along with teaching, the teachers groom the students for their higher studies including providing training for PG entrance exams.
The department has secured mementos from the Management several times for maintaining high academic success and excellent percentage score. At present, there are four permanent teachers and two guest lecturers at the department. Currently, there are more than 100 students in three batches and more than 350 students learn Hindi as their second language.
History of Language, History of Literature, Linguistics, Prosody and Poetics, Ancient and Modern Poetry, Drama, Novel, Short Story, Essay Collections are among the subjects taught as part of the discipline.
